Do I need to pay a deposit to work with a freelance copywriter?

If you’re considering outsourcing your copywriting you may be wondering ‘do I need to pay a deposit to work with a freelance copywriter?’

The answer really comes down to the freelance copywriter you’re looking to work with and if this is something they ask for.

Exchanging money for a service before you’re received it may feel a little uncomfortable, but there are reasons freelancers ask for a deposit before work begins.

Why freelancers ask for a deposit:

  • It confirms both parties are ready to work together. If a freelancer begins the work and you decide you no longer need the service, they’ve lost out on money. The deposit is confirmation you’re both ready for the project to start.
  • It helps with cash flow, especially on long projects. If your project is a big one, a full website copywriting job for example, it could be a while before the freelancer will receive payment. A deposit helps their cash flow so they can focus on doing the best job for you, not rushing the project to the end just to get the money in!
  • Not everyone is a decent human being. Sadly it’s true, some people will take a freelancers work and run, or claim the work isn’t good enough, not pay, and use it anyway! I’m sure this isn’t you, but a deposit just adds a layer of security.

So you’ve found a freelance copywriter you want to work with, they’ve asked for a deposit, how do you know you’re going to actually get the service in return? Trust works both ways after all. You naturally want to make sure the freelancer you’re using is also legit!

Making sure your freelancer is legit

  • Do they have a website and social media presence? Can you openly see they are running a freelance service?
  • Do they have examples of their work? A portfolio that shows they’re active and have delivered work to other clients.
  • Do they have testimonials? Social proof their work is being delivered and it’s good!
  • Talk to them, ask questions. A good freelancer will scope out work and deadlines with you so you know what to expect and when.

Don’t be put off if a freelancer asks for a deposit. It’s not personal to you, it’s confirmation you’re both serious about working together.

As a freelance copywriter I ask for a 50% deposit to get started. It takes away any stress and concerns, the client knows they are booked in and work is underway, and I know they are serious about working together.

So, if you’re asking ‘do I need to pay a deposit to work with a freelance copywriter?’, the answer is yes if that’s how they roll. It’ll be worth it!
