What Is The Point of Writing Tests/Sample Posts?

When I was freelancing full-time, I probably would have (and did!) said that writing a test or sample post for a potential client was stupid.
They have my writing samples. Why do they need more? Hire me or don’t.
Now that I am a manager that hires and manages freelance writers, I can actually answer this question much more clearly.
